FIRST VELYS ROBOTIC KNEE REPLACEMENT IN MELBOURNE

MR. Zayontz performs first VELYS robotic assisted knee replacement in Melbourne

The VELYS robotic assisted knee replacement system is the most recent in robotic assisted joint replacement technology that has num, erous advantages to the patient over other, usually older systems.

It utilises special robotic systems to align the knee according to the patient's individual anatomy and ligament tension. This allows for potentially a far faster recovery and longer term functional outcome.

The surgeon performs the surgery and the VELYS system regulates that the decisions made by the surgeon are performed to extreme accuracy. All decisions are made by the surgeon at the time of surgery, rather than by measurements performed by CT scans that only look at bones but do not take cartilage or ligaments onto account.

Unlike some of the other systems, it does not require a CT scan to assess the bone anatomy. This assessment is performed at the time of surgery to give a true and highly accurate assessment of the real anatomy. This saves thge patient time, money and avoids radiation exposure.

The robotic arm system attaches to the operating table which allows easy ergonomics and flow within the operating theatre during the operation. This improves safety by allowing the staff top focus on the patient and move equipment as needed.

It has a unique alignment system that locks the instruments into the exact, pre-planned cutting plane, allowing the surgeon to execute the cut freely while ensuring the blade cannot deviate. This leads to excellent accuracy.

The VELYS system has been used extensively throughout the world with increasing utilisation due to its accuracy, ergonomic superiority and that it aligns the knee replacement according to the individual patient's unique anatomy and ligament tensions.
